Being The Encourager

"Oh, give me a home, where the Buffalo roam,
And the Deer and the Antelope play.
Where seldom is heard, a discouraging word
And the sky is not cloudy all day.

Dr. Brewster M. Higley 1873

The song was originally part of a poem set to music by Brewster's friend Daniel Kelly. My wife Jane will be happy that I know it is the State Song of Kansas...It is the third line that I am interested in today..."Where seldom is heard, a discouraging word." We certainly live in a world filled with cynicism. There are so many things and people out there that would cause us and others to get discouraged. As people of God, we ought not to be among those who would cause others to become discouraged. "Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the disciples called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement) sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostle's feet" (Acts 4:36-37). My guess is that Joseph, who we know as Barnabas, got that name before he sold the property and gave the money to the apostles. If you want to look up these verses from Acts, (11:21 & 25, 13:13, 15:37, 14:20) they will show how Barnabas earned his name. With all the pain and suffering that there is in the world, our credo certainly should be; "Where seldom is heard, a discouraging word." We should also be Sons of Encouragement, both in word and in deed. "And let us consider how to stimulate one another on toward love and good deeds" (Heb. 10:24). The cool thing about being an encourager is that it tends to be contagious. If we want to be more Christ-like in our lives, we must remember His life. We must remember how He went about doing good and speaking the truth. There are so many opportunities out there for us to do good. Lets lead by example and make our little corner of the world a more pleasant place to live. With our encouragement we may assure that the sky is not cloudy all day....More about encouragement tomorrow

Have a great day...Let you light shine for HIM... Love mark Phil. 4:11
