Countering The Culture

"Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions" (Lk.12:15)

There is little doubt that we live in a material-driven society. I find it interesting that the commercials during the Super Bowl get critiqued as closely as the game itself. It is very hard not to get caught up in the frenzy of more, more and more. Today's verse is closely followed by the parable of the rich fool. (Vs.17-21). It is about a man who put his trust in goods and was about to kick back for many years to enjoy them..."take life easy; eat drink and be merry." You can read about his fate... I would like to share a few ways that the Bible helps us to keep from being caught up with stuff. "Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work....this is a gift of God" (Eccl.5:19). The first thing is to have an appreciation for what we have and realize that it is a gift of God. The apostle Paul says this to Timothy about people who are rich: He says that they should not be arrogant and "to put hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment....Command them to do good and be rich in good deeds, and generous and willing to share" (1 Tim.7:17-19). The second thing is about sharing. The desire to share will make us rich in what we ought to be rich in...Lastly is about drawing comparisons..."We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves" (2Cor.10:12). "Each should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself without comparing himself with somebody else" (Gal.6:4). We live in a wonderfully diverse society. Our comparisons should not come from ourselves or others, but from a higher plane. Our desire should be that we want to be more like Jesus. When we move in that direction, we can truly take pride in ourselves and not want what others have...I will finish this topic on Monday...

Have a great day... Go about doing good... Love mark Phil. 4:11
