Sending A Postcard

"I have much to write you, but I do not want to do so in pen and ink. I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face" (3 Jn.13-14).

When's the last time that you sent someone a postcard? I remember when a postcard was a bit cheaper to send than a regular letter. What with emails, cell phones, texting and such, the postcard has just about become extinct. As I look at 3 John and compare it to some of the other letters in the New Testament, I see a kind of postcard. The card was written to Gaius, a Christian in one of the churches in Asia. Apparently, Gaius had been ill but was doing better. This short note was written to encourage Gaius and we get to know quite a bit about him. The apostle John singled him out. Even though Gaius was faithful to Christ (V 3), one of John's converts (V 4) and faithful and friendly (Vs 5-6), John still decided that he needed encouragement. It might seem a bit strange to encourage someone who is already doing very well, but this is a good tactic. "Attaboys" are always good tools of encouragement. We hope that people don't do good just for the acolades, but it is wonderful to support those that are working hard with an occasional pat on the back. Even though Gaius seems to really have his act together, John wants to be absolutely sure that he knows that he is appreciated. This is a good thing to do in the church. We do good, because it is the right thing to do. Some people continue to do good not just for that reason, but in the knowledge that not only is the Lord watching, but so are others. Now don't get me wrong....We should not be looking over our shoulders for those pats on the back, but recognition through encouragement is a good thing. I have a sister in the Lord who is a wonderful behind the scenes servant, but shies away from public approval. I have learned to send the postcard of encouragement to her privately. Lets be sure to only be good workers for the Lord, but good encouragers...There is more in the postcard of 3 John that I would like to share with you....More tomorrow...

Have a great day.... Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil.4:11
