More About The Postcard

"But Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will have nothing to do with us. So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, gossiping maliciously about us" (3 Jn.9-10).

A postcard may at time be more than just an encourager, but a warner... Maybe one of the reasons that the apostle John encouraged Gaius, was to get him ready for the bad news, This bad news about Diotrephes had filtered to him and John was determined to let Gaius know about the danger. If we take a look at our two verses today, we find all of the bad things about Diotrephes...He loves to be first. "So the last will be first and the first will be last," were Jesus' words on this issue...He rejected John's counsel as he would have nothing to do with us. As a apostle, John's words were the truth and needed to be followed but Diotrephes rejected them. He uses wicked words (gossip) in accusations against the brethren. "Not satisfied with that, he refuses to welcome the brethren. He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church" (V 10). Not only did he reject the brethren, but he forbade others in entertaining them. It seems that Diotrophes must have risen to some form of leadership because he dis-fellow shipped those who wanted to show hospitality. It is no wonder that John started this short postcard off with words of encouragement. There was work to do in countering the negative effect of Diotrophes. Fortunately, Gaius had some help in the form of Demetrius. "Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone---even by the truth. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true" (V 12). Gaius will need this ally to combat the debilitating effect of Diotrophes. It shows us that just one man with the wrong motives can stir up a hornet's nest if allowed to. A postcard can be good, but face to face is much better, so John ends the short note this way..."I have much more to write you, but I do not want to do it with pen and ink. I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face" (Vs. 12-13). There is a lot of good stuff in this short postcard. It would be good for us to meditate on it...I will sum it up tomorrow...

Have a wonderful day....Let your light shine for Him....Encourage others.... Love mark Phil.4:11
