Church of Christ

Three Steps To The Church

"'The time is coming,' declares the Lord, 'when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah'" (Jer.31:31).

We had a Fourth of July church get together at our home this past Monday. To supplement my gas grill, I went out and purchased a charcoal grill with those dreaded words.....Assembly required... To many of you that doesn't mean much, but as my close friends know, I can be challenged when it come to putting things together, so a supposed 45 minute job took an hour and a half. The eight step assembly guide was written in hieroglyphics. I am glad that I understand the three step guide that the Bible has given to us regarding how the church came about. The prophet Jeremiah in today's verse gives us what we like to call a Messianic prophecy. As the old covenant was put into effect by the shedding of the blood of animals, the new one would be ushered in by the shedding of the blood of Christ. This prophecy and many like it in the Old Testament was step one. "In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, 'Repent for the kingdom of heaven is near'" (Matt.3:1). This was step two. The church is not here yet, but getting close. John the Baptist was sent to prepare the people for Jesus. His job was to get the people to realize their sins and come to repentance. Next is the tricky third step. In answer to Jesus' question about who people thought He was, Peter said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matt.16:15). Jesus was so happy that he said, "On this rock I will build my church" (V 18). Because the covenant has yet to be enacted, the church is still just a promise...It has been prophesied by Jeremiah, and prepared for by John the Baptist and Jesus is the final step. Everything to this point is a wonderful promise. If you want to peek ahead, we get to the beginnings tomorrow (Acts 2:29-39)....The ecclesia.....the called about to happen....

Have a great day...Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil.4:11
