New Beginnings - The Birth

"Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and you children and for all who are afar off----for all whom the Lord our God will call" (Acts 2:38-39).

There is a Jewish feast held exactly fifty days after the Passover, aptly called Pentecost. It is at this feast that the apostle Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, addresses a huge crowd of people. This was called in Greek, the ecclesia..."An assembly summoned together." The ecclesia is the Greek word for what is now known as the church or the "called out." The scene must have been a spectacular one. Jews from all over the known world, who spoke many different languages all miraculously understood the words that Peter spoke. When the first gospel sermon was completed, the people cried, "what shall we do?" Peter tells them in today's verse and the response is overwhelming. "Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about 3,000 were added to their number that day" (V 41). Now that's a lot of baptisms!!! The prophet Jeremiah had told of it some 600 years ago and John the Baptist had prepared the way for Jesus. Jesus himself said upon Peter's confession of faith, "that upon this rock I will build my church." Now, fifty days after Jesus glorious resurrection, the church is born. Now that there was a church, what did the people do? Verses 42 to 47 would be wonderful words to read and meditate upon today. Since they did not have Bibles, "they devoted themselves to the apostles teachings." (V 42). No one went hungry or without shelter, because they now had a wonderful commonality... We would do well as members of the Lord's church today to follow their example of love and generosity. With no church buildings, they gladly met in one another's homes. "They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people" (Vs 46-47). We have a wonderful pattern to follow in our relationships with our brethren....More tomorrow.....

Have a wonderful day....Let His light shine through you.... Love mark Phil.4:11
