Gospel One

"Go back to John and report what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy have been cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor" (Lk.7:22).

We all like to hear good news. It seems like when we pick up the newspaper or watch the news on TV that it is mostly bad news. Those purveyors of the news seemingly do this for one purpose.... It Sells! Many people thrive on hearing about the dirt. Jesus came to earth for many reasons and since this is just a short devotional, I can't list them all. Today's verse explains some of the reasons and I would like to zoom in on just one....The GOOD NEWSis preached to the poor . Jesus was reminding John in this verse that the things predicted of him by Old Testament prophecy were coming true before his very eyes. Most of us know that the word gospel is actually defined as the good news. So..... We have heard the term and know what it means. Just what is the good news? To understand this good news, we must first understand God as he is pictured in our Bibles. The apostle Paul gives us a great photo of God in his speech to the Athenians found in the Book of Acts (17:22-34). It would be good for us to read and meditate on these verses. God made the world and as a former science teacher I marvel at it's order and symmetry. To me this symmetry shows the work of a grand designer. He is an independent being who does not really need us, but man is totally dependent on Him. Now comes the really cool part...God created the world and in doing so blessed us with it. Even though he does not need us he made us with this innate feature. He made us in such a way that we would seek him. Augustine said: "You made us for yourself, our hearts are restless until they find peace in you." No matter where in history we find man, God has never been far from him. More about the good news tomorrow...

Have a great day... Allow your light to shine for him.... Love mark Phil.4:11
