No Boasting Allowed

"Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith" (Rom.3:27).

The American poet Walt Whitman was credited with the quote, "If you've done it, it ain't bragging." The old baseball player Dizzy Dean put it this way; "It ain't braggin' if you can do it." Having read about Dizzy Dean, I am almost certain that he did not get his idea from Walt Whitman. That being said, I disagree with both of them. Whether the boast as in Whitman's statement is after the deed or in Dean's, before, there just isn't a reason to brag. The Pharisees were the great braggers of their day. As they boasted about their adherence to the law by their tithing, Jesus responded. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices---mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law----justice, mercy and faithfulness" (Matt,23:23). The Jews of that day put a great store in the things they did, without meditating on why they did them. They thought they were righteous because of their deeds, giving little or no thought of the need for grace, mercy or reconciliation. In today's verse, the apostle Paul condemns such righteousness as imaginary at best. I think that I get what Paul was talking about here. He is saying that boasting is a declaration of one's self-sufficiency. Just as the Jews of 2,000 years ago, we must recognize certain immutable things. As humans, we will sin...."for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Rom.3:23). Our justification, forgiveness and salvation are all under Jesus' protective grace. Simply put, its all about our faith. Faith in Christ allows no room for self-sufficiency.... Sorry, Walt and Dizzy....There is no boasting allowed....

Have a great beginning to your week....Start it with a RAK (maybe a few of them) Love mark Phil.4:11
