Its About Credibility

"Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation to you or from you"? (2 Cor.3:1).

As a teacher I was often asked to write letters of recommendation for my students, either for college or a job. As a minister, I have from time to time been asked to do the same. It is a two-edged sword we are dealing with when we do this. First of all, you are trying to extol the credibility and worth of the person about whom you are writing. Secondly however, there is the issue of your own credibility. You must not stretch the truth lest your own credibility and reputation are compromised.. From the gist of today's verse, this has been going on for a long time. If we do a bit of reading from the previous chapter, it looks like some imposters had infiltrated the Corinthian church and maybe even forged letters to make themselves look like the real deal. Paul, because of his reputation should have needed no letter of this sort and he kind of reverses the metaphor as he writes; "You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody...You show that you are a letter from Christ; the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts" (Vs 2-3). This is so good! Our hearts are the paper of this divine letter and the people around us will read it. It should be the most wonderful of letters because it is written by Christ with the ink of the Holy Spirit. In our daily lives with the things we say and do, we are living representatives of Christ. He recommends us to the world through the writing that is on our hearts. How we conduct ourselves says everything about how powerfully Jesus has affected us. We must take care in all of our words and deeds...Our credibility is on the line....More on this tomorrow....
