We Need The Ebenezer

"Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, 'Thus far has the Lord helped us'" (1 Sam.7:12).

On some level, many of us are into memorials. Saving a playbill from a Broadway show or ticket stubs from an athletic event are ways that we memorialize. We like to remember the experience so we save these things and may even put them into a scrapbook so that we can remember later on. The Old Testament is dotted with memorials erected to honor what happened in a place and the role that God played. Seeing the memorial later would remind the people then and in years to come that God was with them. In today's verse, Samuel raises an Ebenezer. It literally means "stone of help." It marked God's help in defeating the Philistines. I think that there are good things that memorials teach us. They teach us simplicity and unity. In this, we are able to maintain continuity in our spiritual lives. If there is a memorial place in our lives, we should mark it, if only in our hearts. People who have played an important part in our lives should be memorialized with honor. Experiences that have made our lives better and enriched us ought to be preserved. Lastly, there is nothing wrong with keeping mementos of life-changing experiences. Savoring them might help keep us on the path we want to be on. In Old Testament days what God did for His people was often memorialized...I believe that it is still a good thing to do....

Have a great day...Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
