Life In The Shadows

"For who knows what is good for a man in life, during the few and meaningless days he passes through like a shadow" (Ecc.6:12).

The writer of the Book of Ecclesiastes is referred to as the teacher. Here in the sixth chapter he is talking about the brevity of life. The writer of the Book of James puts it this way; "Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes" (4:14). I like the shadow concept that the teacher uses in Ecclesiastes. A shadow is caused when something blocks out the sun. It takes the general shape of the blocking object, depending upon the time of day. The object is real while the shadow has no substance. We need to be careful that we do not live our lives in the shadows. There are things that happen to us in life that can drive us there if we are not well-grounded..Doubt, pain, depression, tragedy, fear and loneliness can all take us there. A person may be prosperous, but without God he cannot enjoy his prosperity. "Do not go to the same place" (V 6). He may go about his life's work without any real satisfaction. To this the teacher writes; "This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind" (V 9). The teacher finds frustration in his life as there are limits to his creativity, power and wisdom. "Who can tell him what will happen under the sun after he is gone" (V 12)? When he tries to go it alone, so many questions are left unanswered. Life in the shadows has an unreliability to it, because it is all about human values and human wisdom. Jesus tells us how to get out of the shadows in the Sermon on the Mount..."But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness" (Matt.6:33). More about coming out of the shadows next time...

Have a wonderful day.....A RAK or two should be in order..... Love mark Phil.4:11
