The Signs Of Repentence

"See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourself, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done" (2 Cor.7:11).

My lesson yesterday at Northfield was about repentance. The Bible is very clear about this topic. Repentance is a true sorrow for wrongs that one has committed. Repentance always begins with godly sorrow. There is a chasm between godly sorrow and worldly sorrow. Worldly sorrow tends to be selfish. Perhaps it is sorrow because we were caught doing something wrong. Maybe its sorrow in that what we did made us look bad. A superficial "sorry" is just that...It is only concerned about ourself and not others, and certainly not about God. When godly sorrow produces repentance, we change our minds. This change of mind causes us to turn away from sin and turn to God. We have made a real decision which says that we will make an honest effort to change. Today's verse shows some signs of real repentance. We will quickly want to do what is right. We will embrace clearing ourselves and quickly desire forgiveness and change. We will actually become indignant toward what we did wrong and be alarmed that if the sin is not rapidly removed, that we might do it again. We will have a longing and concern to do what is right in God's sight and turn to Him. Lastly, is the readiness to see justice done. Simply put, we will want to do what is right instead of the wrong...There is nothing halfway about repentance....
