Strange And Peculiar Aliens

"But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people" (1 Pet.2:9)

I had to go into the KJV to get the word peculiar. I believe that I have been referred to as peculiar a time or two in my life. It appears that Peter is talking to all of us as strangers. If we read two verses later in verse eleven we find these words: "Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world....." Within two verses we have been called peculiar, strangers and aliens in the world. Sometimes the world views us as being weirdos. So... Just how do we live as "aliens and strangers in the world?" Often in sports, a game comes down to the very end in one very pressure filled situation. The world puts us under this kind of pressure all the time and I cut off verse eleven on purpose. Peter tells us how to react to the pressure...."To abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul...Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us" (Vs 11 & 12). We must react to the world's constant pressure. Paul tells us; "Do conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom.12:2). Regardless of the pressure that the world puts on us, we are to respond to God and His teachings. We will convey his message to others through our attitude and actions. We ought to assume our role as God's children in a selfless manner, just as Jesus did. Our lives of sacrifice will serve notice to the world that we are indeed strange and peculiar....Strange and peculiar for the good....
