A Mountainous Metaphor

"I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him" (Mk.11:23).

I find metaphors to be wonderful teaching tools. I am in good company, because Jesus did too. The metaphor in today's verse is one of His more famous ones. Early in his career, Muhammad Ali said; "If I tell you that a gnat can pull a plow, don't doubt, hitch him up." Bragging is much different than using metaphors. By the way so that the metaphor is even more poignant, the mountain is probably the Mount of Olives and the sea is more than likely the Dead Sea. Jesus gave His disciples the ability to do miracles, but literal mountain-moving was not one of them. Our metaphor here is about the removal of obstacles. It is about overcoming great difficulties. It is about being a winner when winning seems impossible. It is about triumphing over hardships or troubles that may stand in our way. Jesus gives us all that same power! The power is prayer and faith-based. In the next verse Jesus says; "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours" (V 24). Jesus expands the lesson by including belief (faith) and prayer. Doubts have a way of negating the power of prayer. Jesus started this metaphor by saying, "Have faith in God." So my final words to you today are; "when it comes to Jesus, don't doubt, hitch Him up."

Have a wonderful day...Let Jesus' light shine from you... Love mark Phil.4:11
