All In


"I know what it is to be in need, I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength" (Phil.4:12-13).

Have you ever watched the Texas Holdem poker tournaments on TV? When a player decides that its time to make the final decision, he puts all of his chips into the pot...The term used is, "I'm all in." When we make our final and important decision to follow Jesus, it is necessary to go all in. As we look at today's verses, the apostle Paul is talking about his ability to cope with every situation in his life. He has gone all in. There is no longer any time for negotiations...There is no more wiggle room. All in means that we have made the ultimate commitment. We ask Jesus to take everything from us that would hinder our closest possible communion with Him. We ask Him to take from us any wish or desire that might hinder us in prayer. We ask that any memory, sorrow or care that might keep us from fixing our total affection on Him be removed. The Lord knows us and where our difficulties might lie, and we ask that He will be there for us. Why was Paul able to make the confident statements that we read? Why was he able to say, "I can do everything through him who gives me strength?" I believe the truth lies in his total commitment to Jesus. He would not allow anything to keep him from what he believed. The secret? He was all in...
