Wanting To Be The King

"Once being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of heaven would come, Jesus replied, 'The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of heaven is within you'" (Lk.17:20-21).

Many of Jesus' parables were prefaced by the term, "the kingdom of heaven is like." If we take them in their sum, they show us a single purpose. In either in a direct or indirect way they show us who God is and what man may become. They show this is such a way as to reach our hearts. Today's verses really tell us something at the very core of Jesus' teaching. The kingdom is within us! Jesus wants to be our king, and when we voluntarily accept Him as such, the kingdom arrives in us. It is an experience or condition inside of us with Jesus reigning as our king. Jesus desires to be the king of our personal lives. He wants to be the king of His people and of all eternity. When Jesus taught in parables, He wanted to get this information to His audience then and now. From the real world He told stories using the present culture and religion. He used common non-living objects like coins, nets, fields and pearls. He used living things like fathers, mothers, kings and shepherds. He used them all to tell us that He wants to be the king of our lives. He used them to convey that the kingdom is a very personal thing that resides inside of us. It is not a "here it is" or "there it is." "The kingdom of heaven is within you." Jesus wants to be the king...Are we going to let Him?
