Taking Roll

"I commend to you our sister Phoebe. Greet Priscilla and Aquila, Greet Epenetus, Greet Mary, Greet Andronicus and Junias, Greet Ampliatus, Greet Urbanus, Greet Apelles, Greet the household of Aristobulus, Greet Herodion...." (Rom.16:1-11)

In the last chapter of the Book of Romans, the apostle Paul takes roll. Do you remember sitting in a class and having the teacher take roll? For those of us with hard to pronounce names, it could be a disaster waiting to happen. When I became a teacher, I knew the embarrassment that came with a mispronounced name, so I was very careful. If I knew that I might have trouble, I had the student pronounce their own name. Such sensitivity.... As it is important for a teacher to know the names of his students, so it was important for Paul to list these names. If you are curious, there are more names that I did not list. For sure I would have had some of these people pronounce their names for me.. So....Just why did Paul list all of these people's names? Maybe it was to convey to us that the church was made up of real people and that faithful men and women handled important tasks. Maybe it was to show that early Christians met in each other's homes and were mobile. Perhaps is was to let us know about the commitment that existed among real people in the church. Maybe we all ought to make an effort to take roll in our church. We might write a note once a week to someone and say, "I thank God for you because..........." Real churches are made up of real people. Get to know and appreciate as many of them as you can....Take roll...

Have a wonderful day... We can make a difference... Love mark Phil.4:11
