The Real Power

"Because the power of the Midianites was so oppressive, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in the mountain clefts, caves, and strongholds" (Judges 6:2).

I guess that the shelters the Israelites prepared in fear of the Midianites were eerily similar to the fallout shelters that were built during the Cold War of the 50s and 60s. Built underground, they were to protect its inhabitants from possible nuclear fallout. We are fortunate that they never had to be used. The Midianites were the power of the day and kept the Israelites in constant fear. The Lord chose Gideon to lead Israel against Midian. The Lord is able to work through the powerless, not the powerful, so He instructed Gideon to downsize his army from over 30,000 to just 300. From all that we know about warfare, this was a ludicrous strategy. Not only that, but their chief weapons were jars and trumpets. God let all who were involved in this conflict know where the Real Power resided. And so it is today...God is still the Real Power! "This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord" (Zech.4:6). We must be certain where the power of the Lord really is! It was not in Caesar of Rome, but in Jesus of Nazareth. His real power can be manifested in us when we become His humble servants. "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all" (Mk.9:35). God has entrusted us with His kingdom here on earth. It will grow not with the heavy hand of demand, but with the light touch of servitude. This is the wonder of God's power...The Real Power....
