Starting A Fire

"Restore us again, O God our Savior, and put away your discipline toward us" (Psa.85:4).

From my old science days, I know that three components are necessary for a fire...There must be something that will burn that is called the fuel. There must be a source of heat to burn the fuel. Since burning is a form of oxidation, you have rightly surmised that the third part is oxygen. In today's verse, the psalmist is asking for a restoration or revival. The people's fire has almost gone out and they need a renewal of God's favor. Verses one through three explain the three components involved in God's rekindling of their fire. The fire is fueled by their confession and fed by God's forgiveness. Only God can supply the heat necessary for the fire of renewal to take place. The psalmist reminds God that He had "showed favor to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob." (V 1)..."You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins" (V 2). In verse three they remind God that He had turned aside His wrath before and they want Him to do it again. It would be good for us to read and meditate on Psalm 85 today. When we stray from God, we run the danger of having our fires go out. The fuel and oxygen might still be there but because we are too far from God, there is no heat. Our fires will grow weaker and weaker. We need that same renewal and revival that the psalmist is pleading for. If you read the rest of the Psalm, you might be able to predict what tomorrow's devotional will be about...

Have a great day...Christians should make a difference... Love mark Phil.4:11
