Getting To Bethel

"So they gave Jacob all the foreign Gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem" (Gen.35:4).

In today's verse, Jacob is making his way back to Bethel. He had previously reunited with his brother Esau, and he wanted God's continued presence and protection. It seems that in their travels the people had accumulated idols from the lands they had passed through. It was important for them to get rid of all the foreign gods....Only the cleansed people can meet God. I am pretty sure that few of us have any of those kind of idols in our possession that compete for God's attention....Or do we? Idolatry can come in many forms, some overt and some very subtle. Jacob had to get to Bethel and to do so, all the foreign gods had to be destroyed. We need to get to Bethel also, and foreign gods will block the way. Whenever something competes for God's attention, it becomes one of those foreign gods. If we hope to get to Bethel nothing can stand in our way. The accumulation of things cannot be allowed to become more important to us than having a personal relationship with God. If we rationalize our sins instead of confessing them, we can't get to God. If we can't remember our last answered prayer, something is standing between us and God. If there are those in need around us and we can't seem to find the time to help, a foreign god has crept in. The road to Bethel will be as uncluttered as we make it! We must put all else aside if we are to complete the journey....

Have a great start to your week....Begin it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
