A Tale of Two Cities

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness"

A Tale of Two Cities....Charles Dickens

Please pardon my use of the first line from the Dickens classic. It really has nothing to do with today's devotional other than to remind you of the title. The children of Israel in the time of Joshua lived in a dangerous world. God provided them with cities of refuge. "Then the Lord said to Joshua: 'Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge as I instructed you through Moses....there they will find protection from the avenger of blood'" (Josh.20:1 & 3). If you are interested, the cities are listed in the next few verses. If we look at the 21st chapter of Joshua, we find that the tribe if Levi were given their own towns and pasture lands too. The cities of the 20th chapter were for a physical refuge, but the priests came out of a the Levite tribe. In providing a city of refuge for the Levite tribe, God would help provide the people with spiritual safety. All of the cities of refuge were close and easily accessible. We live in a dangerous world also, with Satan our enemy in constant pursuit. We may find ourselves facing anxiety and worry. In Jesus Christ, God has provided us with a place refuge. Because Jesus is in our lives, our homes and churches ought to be cities of refuge and safety for us. Jesus is close and easily accessible also. He provides rest for the weary and ease for the burdened with these simple words: "Come unto me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light" (Matt.11:28-30).
