Not To Be A Clanging Gong

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or clanging cymbal" (1 Cor.13:1).

There is an old church adage out there that says; "I'd rather see a sermon, than hear one anytime." I really like to preach, but there's a lot to be said for that adage. The apostle Paul writes this in his first letter to the Thessalonian church: "For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you" ( underlining). Hearing a lesson on a particular Biblical subject that causes introspection on our part is good. Taking a lesson and putting it into practice with discernable actions is even better. It looks like Paul was glad that this church heard and received the word. It is my thought that he was even happier about the "which effectively works in you" part. In today's verse, Paul uses some hyperbole when he says, "if I speak in the tongues of men and of angels." His point is that these words are empty, (resounding gongs....clanging cymbals) if they are not backed up by love. God's Word has all the information that we need for successful Christian living, but only if we put it into practice. We must be more than a preached sermon...We need to be more than a good orator. Good words backed up by good moral character and good deeds show that we want to be doers of the Word and not just hearers or talkers. Lets all strive to be that sermon, and not just a clanging gong....

Have a great start to your week...A RAK or two would be a fantastic way to begin it.... Love mark Phil.4:11
