We're Not The Tomatoes

"But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth" (2 Thess.2:13).

The apostle Paul had a lot of good to say about the church at Thessalonica. In today's verse he gives thanks that from the beginning God chose them to be saved. If we are not careful, and don't read the rest of the verse, one might assume that God made his choice about who is saved and who is not from the jump. Have you gone through the produce aisle at the store to choose the tomatoes you want to buy? If you are like me, looking is not enough. We will want to pick up the tomato to get a closer look and even feel if it is firm enough. When doing the choosing, one is active, and when being chosen, passive. Don't let this verse fool us into believing that we are like the tomatoes when it comes to being chosen by God. When Paul said that from the beginning God chose them to be saved, he didn't mean that we are like the tomatoes that have no choice. The rest of today's verse says: "through the sanctifying work of the Spirit through belief in the truth." God does choose us, but it because of our choice whether to believe and obey the gospel message. It is not enough to look or feel good like the tomato. It is not enough just being passive and waiting for the call to be chosen. We must be the active one, much like Joshua of old when he said: "But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose this day who you will serve, whether the Gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." (Josh.25:15). We're not the tomatoes....
