The Tie That Binds

"Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above" John Fawcett 1782

There are many things that bind people together. Political affiliation will bring like-minded people together. Members of an athletic team have something that binds them together. John Fawcett wrote the words to the classic hymn, "Blest Be The Tie" in 1782 and they echo through the corridors of time. We might ask what the tie is that binds Christians together. Maybe it would be good to consider what the tie that binds is not. It is not an earthly tie like family, marriage or even friendship. Though these are often a part of the tie, they are social or physical. Earthly ties are often broken though separation or incompatibility. The apostles came from different walks of life and at first glance would not be considered to be compatible. There was a tie that bound them together then, just as it does Christians today. "And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them together in perfect unity" (Col.3:14). Love is the perfect bond of unity that binds Christians together. It is love that emanates from God and it is not easily broken. It is learned from the perfect example of Christ and it serves as the true mark of discipleship. "A new command I give you: 'Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples" (Jn.13:34-35). The tie that binds is uniquely Christian in nature because it is patterned after Christ's love. John Fawcett really got it right....
