Shame, Shame, Shame

"The Israelites secretly did things against the Lord their God that were not right" (2 Ki.17:9).

When Gomer Pyle thought that something had been done that was wrong, with that distinct accent he uttered, shame, shame, shame....The Israelites under King Hoshea were doing evil things. They included: building high places (idol worship), setting up sacred stones and the Asherah (fertility goddess) poles on every high hill, burning incense to these gods....Things were so bad that they even "secretly did things against the Lord their God that were not right." I guess they rationalized that if they did things in secret and were not caught they didn't count. When people act shamefully, they often want to hide what they do. Shame is not just about getting caught in a sinful act. It is not simply a feeling of regret and uneasiness. Real shame is when you cannot look your family or neighbors in the eye because of your despicable acts. The Israelites did a lot bad stuff in an overt way, but even that was not enough. They even did shameful things secretly in hope of not being detected. The Israelites turned their backs on the God who brought them out of Egypt. The co-mingled with the people of the land and got involved in their idolatrous practices. Jesus taught about this in the gospel of John. "Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed" (3:19-20). It is still important today that we are in the Light! Secret sin is just as bad as that which is done in the open. We must stand firm in our faith, having the courage of our convictions to what is right in God's sight. We don't want to hear shame, shame, shame....

Have a great start to your week....Begin it with a RAK or two.... Love mark Phil.4:11
