Drifting - How Do We Know?

"We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how can we escape if we ignore (neglect) such a great salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, and was confirmed by those who heard him" (Heb.2:1-3).

You may have heard the story about the eagle that landed on the carcass of an large animal in the winter on the Niagara River, just above the falls. People watched from the shore as the eagle ate, but was getting perilously close to the edge of the falls. The people assumed that the great bird would just spread those magnificent and powerful wings at any time and fly to the heights. But it was cold and the eagle's talons had become frozen to the carcass. The eagle spread its wings but could not separate itself from the carcass and plunged to its death over the falls. The great eagle was not meant to suffer such an ignominious death, but his mistake was in ignoring what was transpiring. We can also drift over the falls if we neglect certain things that keep us close to the Lord. We will drift if we neglect our prayer life and our desire to read the Lord's Word. When we pray and read less and less, we drift more and more. "I rejoiced with those who said to me, 'Let us go to the house of the Lord'" (Psa.122:1). When our desire to meet with God's people on a regular basis is neglected, the falls cannot be very far off. It is not always what we do that causes us to drift away. More often than not it is the subtlety of what we do not do that becomes the culprit. We may not take a sledgehammer to our house to destroy it, but rather just forget about basic maintenance. The results will be similar. Like the eagle, we were meant for a more glorious existence, and certainly a more glorious ending. The writer of the Book of Hebrews question was a rhetorical one. We will not escape if we ignore and neglect the important things. We don't want to drift over the falls....
