A Sense Of Ought

"Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins" (Jas.4:17).

Knowing what we ought to do has been the main cog in the wheel of human behavior forever. Where does one's sense of ought come from? Hindsight being 20/20, we can look at how a person acts in a certain situation and judge whether it is appropriate. On the other side of the coin, why don't people act the way they should? Today's verse starts with; "Anyone, then." To me this means that it is a conclusion or summary of points that have already been made. Lets look...."Now listen, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business there and make money.' Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are like a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, 'If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.' As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil" (Vs.13-16). People often make plans as if they are in complete control of the world, when their attitude ought to be, "If it is the Lord's will." When we come to realize what little control we actually have, we won't put off doing what is right, because we might not have another opportunity. Our sense of ought should spring from our desire to do what the Lord wants us to do. It is being tender to His will, and trying our best to make it ours. Doing the right thing is doing the Lord's thing. The Lord knows what we ought to do in all circumstances, it is up to us to discern that will. That should be our sense of ought.....

Have a wonderful day...Think positive...We can make a difference.... Love mark Phil.4:11
