Thumos - That Dreaded Anger

"Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared" (Prov.22:24).

We have all heard a multiplicity of excuses for people's anger. "Its just human nature"...."Its just the way I am"...."Its that _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (substitute an ethnicity) blood in me"....In case you wondered, the word "thumos" in my title is Greek. It means anger associated with wrath. The word describes an outburst of temper that leads to violence, either in word or deed. It is also descriptive of an uncontrolled or explosive temper. Today's verse from the book of Proverbs is a telling one. It advises that we should not associate with hot-tempered people, lest it rub off on us. Anger of this kind can lead people into sins that will affect them for a lifetime. Unchecked anger has the propensity to give Satan a foothold in one's life. There are times in everyone's life that anger seeps in. The Psalmist say this: "in your anger do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent" (4:4). One must find a way to blunt their anger and not allow it to rule them. I believe that the way to do this is by putting one's complete trust in the Lord. The apostle Paul tells us to "get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger".....He then gives a recipe...."Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ forgave you." (Eph.4:31-32). Jesus set the bar for us by way of compassion and forgiveness. It is a wonderful Christ-like trait to be compassionate and have a forgiving spirit. The more that we allow this spirit to rule in our lives, the less likely that anger will rage within us. The loving and compassionate Spirit of Jesus, led Him to make the ultimate sacrifice for us. Ridding ourselves of anger can allow us to imitate our Savior....

Have a great day....Christians should make a difference.... Love mark Phil.4:11
