That Ask, Seek, and Knock Thing

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened" (Matt.7:7-8).

Have you heard a sermon or two that used those two verses? I don't even have to ask, do I...If I may, I would like to take a slightly different tack regarding these two verses. Maybe you have thought about them this way too, and it will not be so different, but here goes...Jesus taught in two different parables, the value of perseverance. In Luke 11:5-8 we find the Parable of the Persistent Friend and in Luke 18:1-6, the Parable of the Persistent Widow. You might want to browse through them today and perhaps meditate upon them. It would seem that persistence or perseverance is an important characteristic as far as Jesus is concerned. I would maintain to you that these two famous verses from the Book of Matthew, (ask, seek, knock) are really about perseverance. There is an implication in the Greek present tense here that continuous action is meant. Jesus is actually saying: "If you want something, keep on asking"........"If you are looking for something, keep on seeking"...... "If you want that door opened, keep on knocking".....The Bible is replete in reference to persistence in our prayer life. "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thess.5:17) comes to mind. The Bible constantly reminds us of the importance of being in the Word....The blessed man of the first Psalm is spoken of this way: "But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night" (V 2). In the two aforementioned parables, it was the persistence of the friend and the widow that got them the response they wanted. In all things I hope that we persistently look to God for the help that we need. Ask, seek, knock....Hmmmmmm.... That might make a good song.....

Have a great day.... Lets go about doing good.... Love mark Phil.4:11
