So - Who Made You The Judge?

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you" (Matt.7:1-2).

"You can't judge me.....The Bible says it!" This is one of the most misquoted verses in the Bible. It does not say what it seems to say on the surface. People often try to use these two verses to forbid every matter of judgement. If this were the case, pointing someone's faults or using constructive criticism would be verboten. When Jesus was called to task for healing on the Sabbath, He said this to those who were casting dispersions... "Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgement" (Jn.7:24). In today's two verses, Jesus is certainly not ruling out all forms of judging. What he is saying speaks to hypocrisy. Jesus does not want us to be in the business of self-righteously or hypocritically passing judgement on others. If we move on down to verse six, how would we know who the dogs or pigs were without making some sort of judgement? How could we know when not to cast pearls before swine if we don't know who the swine are? Again, if we move a bit further to verses fifteen to twenty, another important judgement is implied. "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them" (Vs. 15-16). This is a powerful implication that some judging must go on for us to differentiate the good fruit from the bad. There are so many scriptures that speak to why and how we must make judgements every day. John tells us to "test the spirits to tell if they are from God." (1 Jn.4:1). The apostle Paul says: "Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil" (1 Thess.5:21). The next time someone lays those verses on you in the context of not being able to make judgements, lets make sure that we know what Jesus was really saying here....Tomorrow we will look at the kind of judging that Jesus does not want us to do....Stay tuned....

Have a wonderful day....Let His light shine through you..... Love mark Phil.4:11
