More About The Kingdom

"I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it" (Matt.16:18).

In the next two verses after today's, Jesus tells us that Peter will be given the keys to the kingdom...They would be good verses to read and meditate upon today. I believe that the words church and kingdom are used interchangeably here. The visible manifestation of God's kingdom today is here on earth, and is called the church. The church is a community of like-minded believers. Their belief resides in the knowledge that Jesus is the Son Of God. Therefore, the church constitutes God's kingdom on earth. Lets look at some words from the pen of the apostle Paul..."For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption and forgiveness of sins" (Col.1:13-14). This verse is from a letter that Paul wrote to the members of the church in Colosse in Asia Minor. In a letter to the church in Thessalonica he wrote: "encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory" (1 Thess.2:12). The comments that Paul makes in both of these verses is to those who are members of the church. We might find it interesting that in today's verse, the words of Jesus say, I will build my church. When Jesus uttered these words the church, His kingdom on earth, had not as yet been established. So, perhaps the next time we say the word church, it should be with a bit more reverence. After all, it is God's kingdom here on earth...

Have a great day....Make a difference in your little part of the world.... Love mark Phil.4:11
