Spiritual Growth - With An Assist


"Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed---- not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence---- continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who works in you to will and act according to his good purpose" (Phil.2:12-13).

In the sport of ice hockey, the ultimate aim is to score a goal by putting the puck into the net. If one or two passes lead to a goal, those players are credited with an assist. As a statistic, an assist is almost as coveted as a goal. As we have gone through life, numerous people ought to have been credited with assists in helping us along the way. In turn, we too might have a few assists in our ledger in our service to others. It is comforting to know that we do not take our Christian walk in solitude, and are not alone in our efforts.... As we look at today's verse, we find that we have the greatest assist giver ever at our disposal...."for it is God who works in you....." When we started on our Christian journey, He was there, and will be there for the assist whenever we need one. "Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ" (Phil.1:6). The Lord assists us through the Holy Spirit in our inner being, as a guide to do what is right. "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us" (Eph.3:20). His assists are often in the form of an empowerment, which is greater than we ask for or can even imagine. Lastly, with God there to help us along, spiritual growth is not only possible but goes beyond any hindrance. If we believe in Him, and know that He is ready to give the assist, there is no excuse not to grow spiritually..."I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" (Phil.4:13).
