Church of Christ

When And How Much

"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously" (2 Cor.9:6).

I was never a farmer, but that not withstanding, I get the sowing and reaping thing. There is a lot to be said about our generosity in 2 Corinthians 9:6-14...These would be good verses to read and meditate upon. In the first century, when the church started, a weekly collection was instituted. Tithing 10% was something that was done even before the old law was instituted, but was not carried over to New Testament giving. The church at Corinth was mostly Gentile, so they would not have known about any of that. Instead, a wonderful set of rationals and principles were instituted. Lets take a look at some of them....The rational for giving each week was to meet the needs of the saints, or church members, even beyond the local congregations. The supreme and inescapable incentive of Christian generosity is found in Jesus. "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich" (2 Cor.8:9). Lets look at a few of our guiding principles.... "Each man should give what he has purposed in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Cor.9:7).... "On the first day of every week each of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper" (my underlining..1 Cor.16:2)...... "If the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has" (1 Cor.8:12)..... It would seem to me that giving is to be based upon our willingness, tempered by what we have. It is to be according to how we have prospered, but with a generous and cheerful heart. It is always to be willingly and never to be grudgingly. All of this insured ready funds that were cheerfully given... How to get more out of our giving tomorrow.....

Have a great day... Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil.4:11
