Getting More Out Of The Sermon

"How will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?" (Rom. 10:14)

I'm not sure how it evolved this way, but the much of the time in most of our Sunday morning assemblies is devoted to preaching. Why? Well, it certainly has the potential to convict us to something important about God. It also should be informative in its content, with the ability to persuade us to be more godly. Because a preacher speaks to a group at different levels of maturity, he can't expect everyone to get everything in each sermon. Some may leave, having been inspired and informed, while some might leave bored and uninspired. It is a daunting task for a preacher to reach everyone with every sermon. So, as a listener, what are the benefits of sitting through a sermon on Sunday morning? Today's verse gives us some insight, and is probably a favorite of a lot of ministers. I humbly believe that the listener has just as important role in this as the preacher does. The sermon presents the listener with many avenues of opportunity. "Because of the hope laid up for you in heaven of which you previously heard in the word of the truth, the gospel which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth" (Col.1:5-6). Please note that through the gospel there was fruit bearing in the Christians of the Colossian church. "Since the day you heard and understood the grace of God in truth." A person can become more fruitful by what they hear and isn't this one of God's desires for us? I believe that it is often by careful listening that we can understand God's grace. Through this understanding, we can be motivated to bear fruit to the glory of God. More about getting more out of the sermon tomorrow....

Have a great day... Do good, give Him the credit.... Love mark Phil.4:11
