One More Benefit From The Sermon

"How will they call on Him whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him they have not heard? And how will they hear Him without a preacher? ..... Consequently, faith comes by hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ" (Rom.10:14, 17).

The apostle Paul asks three rhetorical questions in today's scripture. (V 14) Interesting enough, they are asked in a reverse order. The components necessary to call on Christ according to this verse are: 1. a preacher to deliver the message...2. a proclamation of the message... 3. hearing and believing the message. The second verse that you read above is the main thrust regarding the benefit of hearing the Word preached to us. "Consequently, faith comes by hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ." The point I want to make is that a person can develop a saving faith by what they hear. Now I would be way off base if I excluded the Word from this scenario. After alluding to the many signs and miracles done by Jesus that are not recorded in this book, the apostle John writes: "But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name" (Jn.20:31). The preacher must never exclude the Word from the message that he delivers. The message needs to be steeped in the Word as the preacher attempts to explain it and apply it to our lives. If our faith comes by hearing the message, as Paul writes, then it is incumbent upon us to be good hearers. When we hear a good Word based message, our faith is bound to develop as we are challenged. We are challenged to search that Word, as the Bereans did (Acts 17:11) to assure that the message was presented accurately. I will leave you with my own rhetorical question today... How does listening during the preaching hinder the development of our faith?

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you.... Love mark Phil.4:11
