Our Freedom - To Serve

"It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore, keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery" (Gal.5:1).

Jesus set the tone for his disciples about freedom when he told them: "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free" (Jn.8:31). A few verses later he proclaimed: "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (V 36). We have the words of the apostle Paul about freedom in today's verse, and Jesus' words from the gospel of John, so lets allow Jesus' brother James to chime in on the subject. "But the man who looks into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it-----he will be blessed in what he does" (1:25). WOW! We've all be given a "get out of jail card" so we are free as Christians to just do our own thing with absolutely no strings attached. Hmmmmm... I guess that you've figured out that this isn't what its all about, so what is the nature of the freedom that we have been granted? Paul's statement in today's verse was referencing a freedom from the restrictions and bonds of the Old Law. Jesus was talking about getting into the truth and freedom from sin. James reference to the perfect law of freedom was and is a blessing only reserved for those who are "doers of the word." (V 22) So.... What is this new found freedom that we have in Christ? The real truth of all of this is that we have been set free so that we may serve. Though we are free from sin, we have become slaves to righteousness. (Rom.6:18) This is a most wonderful slavery in that it constrains us to serve one another in love. "You who were called to freedom, brethren, do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another" (Gal.5:13). What a wonderful way to use our freedom... To serve....

Have a great day... Make a difference... Love mark Phil.4:11
