The Prayer Antidote

"Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray..... Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for each other.... The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective" (Jas.5:13, 16).

The term antidote is an intriguing one for me. I conjure up the thought of having ingested a poisonous substance and then taking in something else that completely counteracts its effect. In actuality, that's just about how it works. Unalike a vaccine, taken to prevent some illness, an antidote is administered after the fact... Maybe I can work vaccines into this devotional too... There are a lot of reasons and purposes for prayer. In his letter to the Philippians, the apostle Paul lays out a purposeful thought. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (4:6). I have heard that husbands will buy their wives a gift when they have messed something up. There is a hope that the gift will overshadow the error.... The theory here is that it's hard to be mad at someone when they have done something nice for you... I won't speak to the efficacy of this, but I know it's done. Within a fellowship of Christians, someone is bound to step on a toe from time to time. There is a natural reaction to feel anger if our toes are the ones that have been stepped on..... QUICK!!!! It's time to take the antidote. The antidote of prayer.... When we are praying for someone, it is extremely hard to be angry at them. When we know that others are praying for us, it is hard not to love them. When we give and receive the gift of prayer, it acts as an antidote for a multiplicity of ills... When we are praying for one another within a congregation, our fellowship with God is strengthened. But there's more.... Our fellowship with one another is strengthened also... So.... Lets all get with it! Lets take the antidote....

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you.... Love mark Phil.4:11
