Not Credulity

"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for, and certain of what we do not see" (Heb.11:1).

Since the 15th century, Lady Justice has been depicted wearing a blindfold. This supposedly represents the fairness and objectivity with which justice is to be meted out. In the court of law, the rich, poor, powerful or weak are all to be judged with impartiality. Faith does not wear a blindfold. If it did, it would be called credulity and not faith. Credulity is a blind faith. It is a faith that has nothing evidentiary about it. Today' verse from the book of Hebrews is a wonderful definition for faith. Our faith is based upon a growing knowledge of Jesus Christ. It is just not nearly enough to say; "Oh.... You've got to have faith.... " God's inspired Word supplies us with ample reasons for having a rich and powerful faith. Our faith is about surety. That surety, based on evidence, is certainly all about what we hope for even though our eyes cannot see it. In other words, trusting in things unseen, while maintaining a conviction in regard to one's hopes. The apostle John wrote: "Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and that by believing you may have life in his name" (20:30-31). While we might "walk by faith and not by sight" (2 Cor.5:7) it is not a blind faith... It is not credulity... As we grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ through His Word, it produces a faith that pleases Him. As we seek Him first, we can then start our growth toward spiritual maturity... That entails a rich and powerful faith in Him....
