New Goals

"But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth or rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal" (Matt.6:20).

Setting goals for ourselves is a good thing. In the sport of Track and Field a very cool term is used when one has achieved a goal. It is called a PR... A Personal Record... When an athlete achieves a PR its time to set a higher goal. In this section of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is teaching about the folly of measuring success by the world's standards. The temporal and fragile nature of the storing up of earthly riches is emphasized. He says that they are perishable and are open to theft. He doesn't want our goal setting to be within this realm, but in the one described by today's verse. As he concludes the thought in verse 21, the teaching is explained and sealed... "For where you treasure is, there your heart will be also." He wants us to set our hearts on new treasures. They become our new goals. The great treasure of eternal life becomes our new goal, and to achieve it we must live with new priorities. The greatest priority is in living for Jesus. "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (Jn.14:6). We live for Jesus by following His Words, even the difficult ones... "But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back...." (Lk.6:35). "Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man" (Lk.6:22). We know that we are getting close to our goal when we are able to live for Jesus, even under the most adverse circumstances. Jesus seals this teaching by saying: "Rejoice in that day and leap for joy. Because great is your reward in heaven" (V 23). Jesus shows us the goal, and we work on the PRs....

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you.... Love mark Phil.4:11
