Words Can Hurt

"For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.... For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned" (Matt.12:34, 37).

Few things reveal as much about our character as the words we speak. I know that I've written a lot about actions speaking louder than words, but usually the first impression we make on people is by our words. Do we ever stop to consider what our speech says about us? Today's two verses from the book of Matthew are very important. It would be good for us to read and meditate upon verses 33-37... What comes from the mouth is directly channeled from the heart and it reveals the type of treasure that we have stored there. We were all probably taught the childhood lyric from our parents that went; "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." It was taught to deflect the sometimes mean words that might be directed toward us. The problem is that words often do hurt! "A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin" (Prov.26:28). Use of unwarranted flattery and lying can obviously be destructive. "A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends" (Prov.16:28). There is nothing like gossip to stir up dissension and destroy friendships.... We can also alienate our neighbors, which you have probably witnessed in your life, with unkind words... "With his mouth, the godless destroys his neighbor" (Prov.11:9). I know that this has been a kind of negative devotional, but it would be good for all of us to go through the day with the attitude of thinking before we speak. In that we have all been hurt by the words of others, we don't want to be that type of person. Since I want to be known as the glass half full guy, we will talk about the blessings that words can bring tomorrow....

Have a wonderful day... Make your little part of the world better... Love mark Phil.4:11
