Words Of The Wise

"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Prov.15:1).

A wise use of words can make us as cool as the other side of the pillow... In today's verse we are told that a wise use of words can cool off a potentially incendiary situation. Sometimes it is not only the words that we say, but the manner in which we say them. The Book of Proverbs is generously sprinkled with good advice about the words we say and the way we say them... "Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones" (Prov.16:24). We can cheer the heart of the anxious person with some well spoken and well thought out words. "A man finds joy in giving an apt reply --- and how good is a timely word" (Prov.15:23).... The words we say that reflect a pure heart, are able to both delight and comfort those who hear them. "A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver" (Prov.25:11). What a wonderful metaphor is being used in this verse for the value of good and wise speech.... They're like a fine piece of jewelry... gold set in silver... The New Testament also gives testimony about our speech... "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up, that it may be beneficial to those who listen" (Eph.4:29). We are not only admonished to stop saying unwholesome things, but exhorted to say things that build one another up. Finally, using the example of tasty and preserving salt, the apostle Paul gives this advice: "Let you conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone" (Col.4:6). Our words should seasoned well with words of grace for their hearers. What I am trying to say is that our words ought to be a blessing to others.... Are they?

Have a great day... Be a good walker and talker... Love mark Phil.4:11
