The Emotional vs. The Staid

"But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner" (1 Cor.14:40)... "You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far away from me" (Matt.15:7-8)...

I was a very immature 14 year old when one of the men in our church embarrassed me by asking me to lead a closing prayer with no warning.. I ran out of the door, thinking that I would never return. I told my mom that I wanted to go to a church in town where some of my friends worshipped, so the next Sunday she dropped me off at a local Pentecostal church. I was alright during Sunday School, but worship service got scary when different people started chanting, waving their arms around aimlessly, and moving up and down the aisles. I was sitting next to my mom the next Sunday morning at our regular church.. Over the years I have given some thought to the place of emotionalism in church services. Is there a happy balance between displaying outbursts of emotion and sitting rock still for the entire service? Today's verses give both sides of the story... Paul tells the members of the church at Corinth that things ought to be done with decorum, and Jesus calls the Pharisees to task for words with no heart... I think that our emotions should certainly be a part of our worship. We should sing with a passion for praise. We ought to feel the love that Jesus showed for us as we take part in the Lord's Supper. If the preacher really makes a point that we whole heartedly agree with, an amen is not out of line... I don't feel that God wants us to burst out with unintelligible sounds during worship, but I know that he wants us to be engaged. Our worship should come from the heart, but not the heart alone..."He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but he who walks wisely will be delivered" (Prov.28:26)... When we lay claim to loving God, it must be "with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind" (Matt.22:37). I will write more about the part that our emotions ought to play tomorrow....

Have a wonderful day... Do good..... Give God the Glory.... Love mark Phil.4:11
