A Disciple's Love

"Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves the child as well" (1 Jn.5:1).

When we become believers, we also become disciples. As disciples, we are to model Christ's behavior, especially when it comes to love. Today's verse tells us that a disciple of Jesus is to love both the Father and the Son. Jesus said as much when asked by the Pharisees about the greatest command. (Matt.22:37). Jesus also made sure that discipleship was marked by something else. "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (my underlining) (Jn.13:34-35). Jesus kind of made this the benchmark of discipleship. The apostle John used even stronger terms in explaining a disciple's love for one another, comparing it to passing from death to life. "We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death" (1 Jn.3:14). A disciple of Jesus must for a certainty, love his fellow disciples. Lastly, we look at the love of God for the lost of the world. Jn.3:16, which most of us can quote, comes to mind when we contemplate God's great love for those in the world. Jesus loved those who were lost also. "Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom..... When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless. like sheep without a shepherd" (Matt.9:35-36). A true disciple of Jesus will have that same compassion for those that are lost in sin. This was about who we should love.... Tomorrow it will be about how....

Have a great start to your week... Begin it with a RAL or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
