The Local Church

"Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all part of one body" (Eph.4:25).

There is a sad joke that goes around churches when the degree of commitment is spoken of. It has to do with how much support one gives to his or her local church... There are the WFPOs... They are the group that uses the church for Wedding and Funeral Purposes Only.... We have all probably heard of the C and E group. They are the ones that attend only on special days like Christmas or Easter... The SFs are those who are Somewhat Faithful. They attend sporadically, but cannot be counted on to help very much. Finally there is the core group. I'll call them the FFs... These are the Faithful Few. They are the dependable ones that can be relied upon to do whatever is needed to help the Lord's work in any local church. When we become Christians, we gain membership into what is called the universal church... Jesus was speaking of this when he said these famous words to Peter; "and on this rock I will build my church" (Matt.16:18). Upon one's conversion he becomes a member of that universal church. Since we live in various places, a local branch of this church is necessary. The joining of a local church is a commitment that one makes to work with other Christians to accomplish the Lord's purposes. Many of the apostle Paul's epistles were in the form of letters that he wrote to local churches in places like Galatia, Ephesus, Philippi, Colosse, and Thessalonica. Memberships in a local church are a sort of mutual agreement among Christians to worship together the way that the Bible instructs us to. From a scriptural standpoint, the concept of becoming a Christian and never becoming a part of a local church is a completely foreign idea. The local church has a divine purpose in God's plans for us and it comes with a set of responsibilities that have we toward the Lord and one another. I'll write about those responsibilities tomorrow...

Have a wonderful day... Think global... Act Local... Love mark Phil.411
