Measuring Up

"Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" (1 Sam.16:7).

Today's verse is God speaking to the prophet Samuel. King Saul has failed miserably, and Samuel is about to anoint young David as the new king. "He had a son named Saul, an impressive young man without equal among the Israelites ---- a head taller than any of the others" (1 Sam.9:2). Saul is introduced to us in glowing physical terms, while we get to know David as a shepherd boy tending his father's flock. God explains to Samuel that measuring up is not always what it appears to be... Samuel is not to focus on the outer appearance that had characterized Saul, but a new form of measure is revealed.... The Heart... To our credit, most of us do not choose the people that we associate with solely on outside appearance. But how do we determine if people within the church measure up? There are certainly some outer appearances that are readily usable such as attendance, participation or leadership ability. I go not want to denigrate these as important characteristics, but we need to remember Saul. Though these are certainly admirable characteristics, they are physical measurements, showing only what goes on outside. The problem with using these solely as measurements should be apparent to us. A person may do all of those outside things and still be destitute on the inside. The Pharisees did all of the stuff, but we know what Jesus thought of them and why. If the above characteristics are the only ones used for measurement purposes, that person may remain in spiritual immaturity... The apostle Paul writes some things in the Book of Romans (12:3-8) that would be good for us to read and meditate upon. Measuring improperly is misjudging and is something that we want to avoid. We will look at some better ways to measure tomorrow...

Have a wonderful day... Do good... Give God the glory... Love mark Phil.4:11
