Good Stuff Done Right

"But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret" (Matt.6:3).

"Little Jack Horner, sat in the corner, eating his Christmas pie.
He stuck in his thumb, and pulled out a plum,
And said, 'What a good boy am I.'
"

Many of us probably remember this nursery rhyme from our youth. I'm not sure what Jack had done to wind up in the corner, but his conclusion may give us a hint. Instead of being grateful for the plum, he assumed it came out because he was such a good boy. We have all more than likely read today's verse from the Gospel of Matthew many times. It appears to me that Jesus does not want us to have the attitude of Little Jack Horner... He does not only want us to do charitable deeds, but He wants us to do them with the proper attitude. It may be that the right hand in this metaphor represents our good deed and the left my own opinion about the deed. I believe that Jesus wants us to give in such a way as to avoid not only the praise of others, but not be like Little Jack... It is almost as if Jesus is letting us know that the amount of our voluntary contribution ought to be forgotten as soon as possible... You know... That Jack Horner thing again... How are we able to get to this point in our giving habits? When I was a baseball coach, the most important part of a practice session was repetition. A repeating of a particular skill in the correct way will cause us to do it the right way in the game. Not only do it the right way, but not to have to think about it or process it first... If our giving is done often, we won't even have to process the how and the why. Augustus Toplady (1740-1778) said: "The true Christian cares not how much men hear of his public charities, nor how little they hear of his private ones." Lets not forget about the Father's reward for good stuff done right..... "Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you" (Matt.6:4). Lets do it right....

Have a great day... Lets make a difference... Love mark Phil.4:11
