Jesus Teaches Humility

"After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded" (Jn.13:5).

Here in the thirteenth chapter of the Gospel of John, there is a shift in Jesus' message. Up until this point, most of Jesus' teaching was directed toward the world. With His death looming, He now turned His direction toward the twelve disciples. Because He would not be around much longer, He was focused on instructing and preparing them. In doing so, He instructs and prepares us also. The streets in Jesus' day were dirty and dusty, and if people had foot ware at all it was in the form of sandals with no socks. If you were to invite me to your home, I could clean up in preparation, but there was little I could do to enter your home with clean feet. If you could afford it, a servant would most likely take care of the foot thing as I entered. It is against this backdrop that Jesus performs His foot washing. When Jesus got to Peter, the often impetuous one was aghast. I can almost hear him now.... In his bravado and misplaced sense of honor he would not allow this to happen. We come to a very important lesson about humility here. I realize that there are people in the world who always want to be served and those who are often reluctant. If we are among the latter, we must change. We must allow people to serve us in humility, even if it goes against our natural instincts. Peter, looking to Jesus as his superior, didn't get it... In the grand scheme of his view, he should be washing Jesus' feet, and even after Jesus told him this; "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this." He still remained firm.. "You shall never wash my feet" (V 8). I find it divinely interesting that one day Peter would write these words: "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time" (1 Pet.5:6). There will be more this week about humility....

Have a great start to your week.... Begin it with a RAK or two.... Love mark Phil.4:11
