Its About The Branches

"The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are the garden of delight" (Isa.5:7).

Many centuries before Jesus, the image of a farmer tending to a vineyard was used by prophets like Isaiah. They found it to be useful in trying to explain the relationship between God and man. In chapter six, a man had cleared some land and planted it with the choicest of vines. He tended to it with care, built a watchtower and a winepress in expectation of a bumper crop of delicious grapes. Instead it yielded only bad fruit. Today's verse was written as a conclusion to this event. In the fifteenth chapter of John, the imagery of the vineyard is used again. It would be good for us to read the first twelve verses and meditate upon them. The imagery of the vineyard is used here and again it is about the relationship between God and man. "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit." Jesus' emphasis is different than that of Isaiah. With Jesus, the focus is on the branches..... That's us! It is about the relationship of the branches to the vinedresser... That's God! He emphasized that the branches only exist because they are attached to the vine... That's Jesus! Because sin exists in the world, the Father sometimes prunes so that the branches may produce more and better fruit. The pruning is always done out of God's divine wisdom and love. As branches, it should never even cross our mind to separate ourselves from the vine just because the Father prunes... The branches need to be aware at all times that without the vine it will wither away and die. God and His Son want us to know what has been done for us and continues on... Its all about the branches.....
