The Strength in Love and Joy


"I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love may have power together with the saints to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ" (Eph.3:16-18).

The apostle Paul prays on behalf of the Ephesian church here in the third chapter. (Vs 14-21) It would be good for us to read these verses today and meditate upon them. We don't always equate strength with joy and love, but they are more closely related than we might think. After the wall had been rebuilt in the days of Nehemiah the prophet, on the first day of the seventh month, Ezra read The Law to the people. Nehemiah declared that it was a special day and said: "Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength" (Neh.8:10). Real spiritual strength is derived from the joy of salvation that we find in the Lord. Paul has some very telling and poignant things to say about love. He says about love that it "bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.... Love never fails" (1 Cor 13:7-8). Can anything bring us more true spiritual joy than something that bears, believes, hopes, and endures all things? Can we find any more spiritual strength in something that never fails? Is it possible that spiritual strength is lacking today because there is not enough real love for the Lord and the joy of His salvation? We simply cannot take the spiritual blessings of God's grace for granted if we desire to have the real love, strength, and joy that only He offers us. We will find no strength any greater than that which is based in God's love and joy... The strength in Love and Joy....
