More Listening

"Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice" (Ezek.33:32).

There are two more points that I would like to make about being good listeners. The Israelites wound up in captivity because of their bad attitudes followed by inaction. It appears from today's verse that they heard Ezekiel's words. They heard them, but did not heed them. As important as the Word is, whether studied or preached, if we are just hearing for hearing's sake, we've lost the meaning... Some men are able to speak with a concise clarity and we may be mesmerized by their eloquence. That's not entirely wrong, but if that is all there is, we've missed the point. In his epistle, James puts it this way: "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says" (1:22). We are not called to follow blindly, but we are called to action. James goes on to write that a man who listens to the word without putting it into action, is like one who looks at himself in the mirror. Upon looking, he goes away, forgetting what he looks like... The blessedness of God's Word comes only to the listeners when they go into action as a result. We are also called to listen with faith. By this I mean that we are to have a willingness to believe what is shown in God's Word... Lets listen to the writer of the Book of Hebrews.... "For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith" (4:2). Those Israelites who died in the wilderness did so because they did not listen with faith. We do not want to fall short of our heavenly destination because we have failed to put our faith into action... Lets be blessed as faithful hearers and doers...

Have a wonderful day... Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil.4:11
